BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Hempstead Owner’s Guide

BFT welding and fabrication repair in Hempstead typically runs $285 to $640 installed, depending on whether we’re patching a cracked gate frame, re-welding a hinge bracket, or fabricating a replacement component from scratch. Most jobs are completed the same day our truck arrives. What usually brings Hempstead homeowners to this page is a gate that suddenly sags, a weld that split along the bottom rail, or a bracket that tore clean off the post after years of salt and freeze-thaw cycles working on the metal.

We carry BFT-compatible steel stock, hinge plates, and bracket material on our trucks, so we’re not running back to a supplier mid-job. Lonnie Burke has been repairing and fabricating gate hardware across the New York area for the better part of two decades, and around Hempstead, we see the same failure pattern over and over: the weld holds fine, but the metal adjacent to the weld gives out first. The repair has to account for that, not just lay a new bead over the old crack.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT operators get paired with a wide range of gate hardware, so the welding and fabrication work we do isn’t tied to one model number. What matters is how the gate was built and how the operator mounts to it. We routinely weld and fabricate for BFT swing operators (the Deimos, Phobos, and Aries lines), BFT sliding operators (the Rigel and SIRIO series), and BFT hydraulic units running heavier commercial-style gates in Hempstead’s larger properties.

The compatibility gotcha with BFT systems is mount geometry. BFT swing operators use an articulating arm or rack-and-pinion drive, and the mounting plate has to sit at a specific height and setback from the hinge pivot. If you weld a new plate or bracket even half an inch off, the operator binds, the limit switches trip early, and the board throws a fault. We measure off the existing mount before cutting anything. For OEM versus aftermarket, BFT’s own mounting hardware is well made, but when the gate frame itself needs repair – a rotted bottom rail, a cracked stile, a hinge that pulled out – you’re past the parts catalog and into fabrication work. That’s where the skill lives. A quality aftermarket steel patch, properly gusseted and painted, will outlast the rest of the gate.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags noticeably at the latch end. A hinge weld or the hinge bracket itself is stretching or cracked. The gate still opens, but every cycle puts more load on the operator until the motor burns out.
  • You hear a metal-on-metal scrape or grind during part of the travel. A cracked weld lets the gate flex, so a corner of the frame drags against the post or the ground. The scrape marks usually tell us exactly where the failure is.
  • The gate shudders or hops when the BFT motor starts. A broken weld on the operator mount lets the drive arm flex under torque. That shudder is the mount moving, not the gate. Left alone, it cracks the mount plate completely.
  • You see rust staining or flaking paint at a corner joint. Water got into the weld seam, froze, and started splitting the joint from the inside. Hairline rust lines are the earliest warning sign on Long Island gates.
  • A hinge pin fell out, or the hinge leaves no longer line up square. The welded hinge bracket has twisted or broken. When you lift the gate, it moves up and down more than it should. Every cycle is now chewing the remaining weld.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Hempstead homeowners, here’s the honest price picture. A simple crack repair along a gate frame rail runs $285 to $330. Re-welding a pulled hinge or replacing a broken hinge bracket runs $340 to $420, depending on steel thickness and access. Full fabrication like a new bottom rail or a reinforced operator mounting plate runs $475 to $640. If we’re building a complete gate section from scratch, we quote that before cutting any steel, and the number doesn’t move after the work starts.

One thing Hempstead’s salt air and wet winters do is rot weld seams from the inside. A cheap fix that just re-welds the visible surface crack will fail again in a year or two. Our price includes grinding back to clean metal, reinforcing the joint where the metal has thinned, and painting the repair so it doesn’t rust through the first winter. We hand you the price before we touch the gate, and every repair carries a written guarantee good for a full year. If the weld fails inside that window, we come back free of charge, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do is document what you’re seeing. Take photos of the crack or sag point, measure the gate width and height, and note which BFT model is mounted on the post. That helps us quote the job over the phone and bring the right steel on the first trip. What you should not attempt is grinding and welding on a gate that carries hundreds of pounds of tension and is wired to a live operator. A bad weld on a load-bearing gate fails catastrophically, not gradually, and the gate will take the path of least resistance when it lets go. That can mean a falling gate panel, a snapped hinge, or a motor that tears itself off its mount.

If the gate’s not right, we’re not done. Call us at (516) 559-4870, describe what you’re seeing, and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician to Hempstead with a written price before any work starts.
